Dealing with climate change is now Bangladesh's biggest challenge

Afforestation a Duty and Right of the citizens

Severe landslides and floods are projected to become increasingly common in Bangladesh. Communities living in the Chittagong hill districts of Bangladesh recurrently observe landslide disasters during the monsoon season. Slopes that have been altered for construction of buildings and roads are more prone to landslides.Extreme monsoon rains aren't the only threats climate change poses to the struggling nation. Cyclones and sea-level rise are also taking their toll. Climate experts predict that by 2050, rising sea levels will submerge some 17 percent of the nation's land and displace about 20 million people. So Dhaka, for so many of its transplants, is a city of last resort. It is estimated that each year, Bangladesh loses about 32 square kilometres of habitable land due to erosion in rivers and regains 52 square kilometres of inhabitable land due to sediment deposition. The newly formed land requires afforestation and long-term development.Environmentalist Aarna Wadhawan did an awareness program and explained the importance of afforestation.Bangladesh is at high risk of facing climate crisis. She warned about  the risk caused by constructions, brick kilns, vehicle fume and waste incineration which are primary contributors to air pollution in Dhaka. She enlightened the children of Bangladesh with the hazards caused by deforestation. She also gave emphasis on planting trees. The densely populated capital of Bangladesh has once again topped the list of cities with the worst air quality in the world. The Government of Bangladesh is considering different interventions to reduce the emissions from those sources by adopting conversion of diesel/petrol vehicles to CNG, increasing traffic speed in the city and by introducing green technologies for brick production. The country needs to reduce environmental harm and embrace green-growth policies to ensure sustainable economic development in the coming decades. The World Bank contributed to some of these efforts through its support for the Clean Air and Sustainable Environment (CASE) Project and other initiatives. Aarna says that the year by year degeneration and regeneration of the land, and subsequently, environment is very important for the region, but what is even more important is to nurture the regeneration so that it remains habitable for the people.

She attempted to make full efforts to promote conservation of native environment for the people of the region.
